SMTP Relay FAQs

How does SMTP Work?

When the email service provider (ESP) attempts to deliver email, it connects to an SMTP server, communicating with it over Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). Once the connection is established with the SMTP server, it can then deliver email messages.

What is mail relay?

Mail relay is the act of transferring an email from one server to another for delivery. When one company sends to another, say Company A and Company B, Company A's server connects to Company B's server, which relays the email. An SMTP server accepting mail from another SMTP server is called "relaying."

What is an SMTP Relay Service?

An SMTP relay service helps a sender deliver transactional and bulk email, by routing the email through a trusted 3rd party. The SMTP relay service provides all of the underlying technology and expertise to help businesses deliver email over SMTP.

When should I use an SMTP Relay Service?

Many businesses use SMTP to send bulk email, marketing messages, and transactional messages (e.g. order confirmations).
Common Cases:
  • A web or mobile app needs to send notification messages.
  • You're looking to streamline marketing messages, improve email deliverability.
  • You need a simple way to send email from an appliance, like a printer, scanner, fax machine, or IoT device.

How do I connect to the SMTP Relay Service?

Once you've created your account you can connect to the SMTP Host at ssrs.reachmail.net. You can connect using the credentials for the User Interface port: 25, 2525, 587, and 465 (SMTPS only). See the SMTP Connection Details for more.

What are MTAs? What are MUAs? What's the difference?

MUAs, or Mail User Agents, let a user read, compose, and send email. Mail Clients like Apple Mail, Thunderbird, and Outlook are MUAs

MTAs, or Mail Transfer Agents, handle the transport, delivery, and forwarding of email. SMTP servers like Exim, Postfix, and Qmail are MTAs.

What if my device does not support SMTP Authentication or SSL?

If your device does not support SMTP Authentication or SSL, ReachMail offers an IP Authentication method. This is great for printers and devices
If you need to determine whether or not your device supports SMTP Authentication or SSL, please review the Appliance Support page for ways to check.

How do I troubleshoot SMTP connection problems?

Start by checking your connection software for the specific error. ReachMail also stores your connection log. You can find it on the Account Dashboard.

Connection refused or cannot connect to remote host errors are usually related to an ISP blocking traffic on port 25. Port 25 blocking is often the default for many ISPs and should be avoided whenever possible. The preferred port for message submission is port 587.

Telnet can confirm connectivity on a specific port. Authentication, Authorization and SSL related errors can be diagnosed with openssl. Examples can be found in the smtp troubleshooting guide.
